LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns defender Gwen Mummert picked up her first accolade of the 2020 season when she was named to the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer team in a release Thursday by the league office.

Louisiana, which finished 9-8-3 in 2019, was picked to finish in a tie for fifth place in the preseason poll that was voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Mummert, who was a first-team All-SBC selection and a second-team All-Southeast Region selection in 2019, helped guide Louisiana to a semifinal appearance – the first in school history – in the Sun Belt Conference Women’s Soccer Championships.

In 20 matches on the season, Mummert scored five goals and added an assist playing as the center back on a defensive line that helped produce the lowest goals against average (1.20) in school history. Mummert set a single-season, school-record with four penalty kick goals and played 1,679 of a possible 1,722 minutes during the regular-season.

Mummert, who helped spearhead a six-match turnaround in the win column under first-year coach Lance Key, was the first Louisiana player to earn Sun Belt All-Tournament honors in school history.

Defending league champion South Alabama picked up nine of 11 first-place votes to be selected to finish first in the preseason poll with 119 points. Troy (97 points) was picked to finish second in the league standings with Arkansas State (86), Texas State (84), Louisiana (74) and Coastal Carolina (74) following.
