STARKVILLE, Miss. – Onyi Echegini scored a pair of first-half goals and Andrea Tyrrell added an insurance goal after intermission to lead Mississippi State to a 3-1 victory over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.

Louisiana (9-7-1), playing its second match of the spring against SEC competition, was held to two shots in the contest – both by freshman Demi McCalliogg – with her first career goal cutting the Bulldog lead to 2-1 in the 64th minute.

Mississippi State (3-4-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute on Echegini’s unassisted goal past Louisiana starting goalkeeper Carly Dean before adding her second goal 13 minutes later off an assist from Hailey Farrington-Bentil.

McCalliogg was credited with Louisiana’s first shot attempt last in the 51st minute before finding the back of the net for her first career goal. Izzy Wheeler set up the goal with ball into the box that was challenged by Gwen Mummert and finished off by McCalliogg who scored past MSU goalkeeper Maddy Anderson.

Tyrrell would add her insurance goal seven minutes later as she took a pass from Niah Johnson and scored past Lauryn Starwood.

MSU held a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 9-4 lead in corner kicks. Dean faced five shots with a pair of saves in the first half for Louisiana before Starwood collected one save while facing four total attempts.

Louisiana will continue its six-match 2021 Spring campaign on Sunday (March 14) when it hosts in-state rival McNeese in a 5 p.m. exhibition match at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The match is the first of two at home for Louisiana, which will also host in-state foe Nicholls on Thursday (March 18) in a 5 p.m. contest.
