Soccer: Louisiana Drops Regular-Season Finale at A-State, 3-0

Ragin’ Cajuns will face Coastal Carolina in SBC Quarterfinals on Nov. 4

JONESBORO, Ark. – Sarah Sodoma scored a goal on a penalty kick in the 12th minute and West Division leader Arkansas State added a pair of goals in the second half to earn a 3-0 victory over the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in the Sun Belt Conference regular-season finale for both teams on Sunday at the A-State Soccer Complex.
 
Louisiana (8-4-1, 4-3-1 Sun Belt), which will face Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Nov. 4, recorded 11 shots against A-State goalkeeper Megan McClure but was unable to find the back of the net against the league’s top defense.
 
A-State (8-1-1, 7-0-1 Sun Belt) picked up a goal against the SBC’s second-best defensive unit as Sodoma’s penalty kick goal snapped a 724-minute scoreless span against the Ragin’ Cajuns, that began after a Sodoma goal in the 28th minute in the previous meeting between the teams on Sept. 24.
 
The Red Wolves scored on an own goal early in the 61st minute when Sodoma crossed a ball to Hailey Furio deep into the Louisiana box that was knocked in past Louisiana goalkeeper Lauryn Starwood by a sliding Alex Augustyn.
 
Maggie Ertl added an insurance goal in the 86th minute for Arkansas State when she took in a corner kick from Haley Husted and headed an attempt over the out-stretched hands of Starwood.
 
Lizzie MayfieldKarleen Bedre and Katelyn Stamps each recorded two shots for Louisiana, which had six shots on-goal. Starwood recorded four saves for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
 
McClure recorded five save for Arkansas State while Ertl and Abigail Miller each took a team-high three shots.
