NEW ORLEANS – After leading the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Women’s Soccer team to a pair of victories to open the 2020 season, juniors Jordan Higgins and Lizzie Mayfield were named on Wednesday as the Sun Belt Conference Players of the Week in a vote by the league’s head coaches and released by the conference office.

Higgins, named the SBC Defensive Player of the Week, stopped 11 shots and posted a 0.46 goals against average in posting wins over Abilene Christian and defending SBC champion South Alabama. Higgins posted a shutout against ACU in her Louisiana debut last Friday with four saves before stopping seven shots – including an early penalty kick opportunity – in a come-from-behind 2-1 win against South Alabama on Sunday.

Mayfield earned SBC Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording a pair of three-point outings to start the season. The West Virginia transfer scored a goal and added an assist in Louisiana’s 2-0 victory over ACU to open the season before adding some late heroics in the Ragin’ Cajuns first win over South Alabama since 2016.

Her unassisted goal with just over a minute remaining in regulation knotted the match at 1-1 before assisting on freshman Alyssa Abbott’s golden goal in the 107th minute.

Louisiana, off to its third 2-0-0 start in school history, will return to action on Sunday when it plays host to Stephen F. Austin at the Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m., start and will be streamed live on ESPN with live stats available at CajunStats.com.

The Ragin’ Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020 season (unless state policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season.

Should disruptions or modifications to the 2020 season occur due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Athletics will quickly communicate the adjustments through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com. Additionally, the department will communicate any changes to specific entry and attendance protocols for home matches.
