"The Normandy American Cemetery, overlooking Omaha Beach and the English Channel, was established on June 8, 1944, as the first U.S. cemetery in Europe during World War II. It holds the graves of more than 9,300 U.S. servicemen who died in the D-Day invasion or subsequent missions."

History of Veterans Day

Source, Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs website.
World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

For several years, the Athletic Network has been developing a Military Page. Although it is a work in progress, there are now over 100 entries, some with photos of the veteran in military attire.

Thousands of SLII, SLI, USL, and UL-Lafayette athletes and support group members have made and continue to make patriotic sacrifices in their unique support of freedom.
