Men’s Basketball:With Brayan Au out for the season, who handles the point for the Louisiana Ragin’

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, Feb. 16, 2021

Brayan Au, Louisiana’s starting point guard, will undergo season-ending knee surgery, Ragin’ Cajuns coach Bob Marlin said Monday afternoon.

Au had knee surgery in October, shortly before the start of the season, then fell on the knee and aggravated it last month, Marlin had said.

Au, a native of Nuevo Casas Grande, Mexico, was to have the surgery this week. However, Marlin said that it may be delayed until next week because of inclement winter weather in Texas, where Au played his high school ball at Anthony High near El Paso.

transfer from Ranger (Texas) College, Au has averaged 4.4 points, 3.7 assists and 25.9 minutes over 18 games in his first season with the Cajuns (14-7, 8-6 Sun Belt Conference).

Ty Harper getting comfortable

Devin Butts, a guard transfer from Mississippi State, moved into the starting lineup for UL’s Feb. 6 loss at Arkansas State, the first of three straight Au has missed.

But Butts has been suspended UL’s past two games for undisclosed disciplinary reasons, so Harper – a California high school product from Georgia who joined the team between semesters – has been starting alongside combo guards Wilson and Russell.

Harper had 19 points on 7-for-9 shooting against ULM. He was 5-for-5 from 3-point range.

“He (Harper) responded very well Saturday,” Marlin said, “and that helped.

“That was big for us, and hopefully he’s more comfortable. … We’re gonna need his play moving forward, for sure.”
