LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns guard Cedric Russell scored the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s (LSWA) third Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor, per an announcement by the LSWA on Monday afternoon.

The weekly award is voted on by the state’s sports information directors along with select members of the media. The award was the first-ever for Russell and the second by a Ragin’ Cajuns player during the 2020-21 season joining teammate Theo Akwuba.

Russell helped the Ragin’ Cajuns extend their win streak to six games overall and improve to 4-0 at the Cajundome after posting a pair of 10-point victories over in-state opponents New Orleans and McNeese.

The Sun Belt Conference’s third-leading scorer (19.0 ppg), the senior averaged 21.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals over the course of the week, all while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 89 percent from the free throw line.

Russell posted his third straight 20-point game with a game-high 23 points against McNeese on Saturday, moving into 37th place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,096 career points. Notably, he hit four free throws in the final 1:05 to help preserve Louisiana’s sixth straight win over its I-10 rival while improving to 33-1 in home games against in-state opponents in the Bob Marlin era.

Four days prior, the senior guard notched a game-high 20 points along with three assists and a steal as the Ragin’ Cajuns powered past New Orleans, 73-63, helping Louisiana earn a home-and-home series sweep against the Privateers.

Louisiana will officially open Sun Belt Conference play Jan. 1-2, 2021 against Texas State in a two-game homestand at the Cajundome. The teams will meet on Friday (Jan. 1) in a 6 p.m. contest before wrapping up the weekend series with a 4 p.m. game on Jan. 2.

The games will be streamed live on ESPN and broadcast in the Lafayette area on KPEL 96.5 FM.

Season-ticket holders can download their tickets through mobile ticketing from Ticketmaster. Fans can download the #GeauxCajuns app to their smart phone to begin the process. Season-ticket holders who are unable to download tickets or wish to have printed can visit the Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office at the Cajundome to have them printed.

For more information on Men’s Basketball tickets, fans can call the Louisiana Athletics Ticket Office at (337) 265-2170.

The Cajundome will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020-21 season (unless state COVID-19 policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season. The Department of Athletics will quickly communicate any schedule adjustments or changes to attendance protocols through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com.

In the interest of public safety and following the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety and Security (NCS4) Best Practices Guide, the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Athletics Department is implementing a clear bag policy at all venues that host ticketed events effective with the 2020-21 competition season. Information about the clear bag policy can be found by visiting www.RaginCajuns.com/clearbag.
