LAFAYETTE – A Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Men’s Basketball uniform number from the past will circulate back into use for the 2020-21 season in an announcement by head coach Bob Marlin.

Starting with the 2020-21 season, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ No. 10 jersey – most famously worn by consensus All-American Dwight "Bo" Lamar – will make its way back into the uniform rotation.

Lamar’s No. 10 – along with the honored uniform numbers of Dean Church (12), Marvin Winkler (14), Jerry Flake (20) and Andrew Toney (24) – will continue to be recognized in a unique way that a handful of other schools have been doing.

"Current players and recruits ask all the time for jersey numbers, and in many circumstances the retired numbers have come up," Marlin said. "We have explored ways that we could bring the retired numbers back into use while continuing to honor the rich tradition of the Ragin’ Cajuns program. By looking at some other programs in the country, we believe we have found a way to do so in honoring our great players from the past, the present and in the future."

Lamar, who followed Winkler as the second number honored by the Ragin’ Cajuns, finished as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 3,493 points – a record which still stands and is second in NCAA history. The only player in NCAA history to lead both the college and university divisions in scoring, Lamar averaged 31.2 points per game in his career and was a three-time All-American.

"I would be honored for any player to wear the No. 10 in a Ragin’ Cajuns uniform," said Lamar. "(Then-) USL gave me an opportunity to showcase my talents in front of some of the greatest fans in the world. I enjoyed my time in Lafayette a great deal and I was able to develop lifelong friendships during my time on campus. I hope the next player who wears the number 10 will create their own legacy of success. USL has a special place in my heart and it’s my honor to help the program in any way I can."

The revised criteria for honoring Ragin’ Cajuns jersey numbers is the following:

Retired jerseys
  • National Player of the Year (Associated Press, NABC, USBWA, The Wooden Award, Naismith Award)
Honored jerseys
  • Named Conference or State Player of the Year (Louisiana Sports Writers Association, Pete Maravich Memorial Award)
  • Named to an All-America team
  • Participated for Team USA at the International level
  • Selected to a Hall of Fame (Louisiana Athletics Hall of Fame, Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame, Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame)

Louisiana is scheduled to officially tip off its 2020-21 season on Saturday against Loyola of New Orleans at the Cajundome.

The Cajun dome will operate at a significantly reduced capacity for the 2020-21 season (unless state COVID-19 policy changes during the season). This will allow for fans and University students to be accommodated this season. The Department of Athletics will quickly communicate any schedule adjustments or changes to attendance protocols through its social media channels and RaginCajuns.com.
