Golf: Back Nine Struggles Slips Louisiana To Third at Hoakalei Invitational

Hinnant, Ortego post top-10 finishes to lead Ragin’ Cajuns in fall finale

EWA BEACH, Hawaii – Peter Hinnant and Eli Ortego each posted rounds of even-par 72 to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Golf team, but struggles on the back nine led to its worst team score of the season as the Hoakalei CC Invitational wrapped up play on Tuesday at Hoakalei Country Club.
 
Louisiana, which held a two-stroke lead after Monday’s second round, posted a team score of 15-over-par 303 in the final round and finished third overall in the 14-team field at 6-over 870. The Ragin’ Cajuns, playing in their final fall event of their 2021-22 season, finished behind No. 66-ranked San Diego (857) and Loyola Marymount (859) with Utah Valley (873) and Grand Canyon (873) rounding out the top five.
 
Hinnant, who recorded his seventh career top-10 finish, finished in a tie for sixth place for Louisiana after completing the 54-hole event at 3-under 213. Ortego posted a 54-hole total of 2-under 214 to record his second career top-10 performance and finish in a tie eighth for the Ragin’ Cajuns.
 
Charlie Flynn (73-68-79-220) recorded a 7-over-par 79 in the final round for the Ragin’ Cajuns with freshman Burke Alford (76-79-80-235) recording an 80 and Hudson Dubinski (72-71-82-225) an 81.
 
The Ragin’ Cajuns posted five of their 15 birdies on the back nine while posting eight holes of double bogey or higher and posting a team score of 15-over 159.
 
USD posted a final round score of 6-under 282 – one of two rounds recorded below par on the final day – with LMU recording a final round score of 290. USD’s Charlie Reiter posted his second consecutive round of 3-under 69 to finish at 8-under 208 for the event and one stroke ahead of first-day leader Tony Hendricks of LMU.
 
Louisiana will open the spring portion of its schedule on Feb. 14-15, 2022 when it competes at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala.
