Football: Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns special teams coach Robby Discher joins Georgia football program

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, Feb. 28, 2021

The Ragin’ Cajuns have lost another assistant football coach.

Robby Discher, UL’s special teams coordinator, has left to assist with special teams at an SEC program.

“Yes I’m going to Georgia,” Discher told The Daily Advertiser.

Discher becomes the fourth assistant coach to leave UL after the Cajuns went 10-1 last season.

Inside linebackers coach Austin Armstrong is now Southern Miss’ defensive coordinator, cornerbacks coach LaMar Morgan left to coach corners at Vanderbilt and offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Rob Sale reportedly plans to coach the New York Giants offensive line.

The Cajuns also had a position left vacant after assistant offensive line coach D.J. Looney died in August.

Cajuns staff is in flux

UL has hired five new full-time assistants this year to fill out its staff: Florida Atlantic offensive line coach Jeff Norrid to coach the offensive line, Sam Houston State offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to assist with the offensive line, Louisiana Tech cornerbacks coach Jeff Burris to coach corners, South Florida safeties coach Wes Neighbors to coach safeties and North Texas linebackers coach Galen Scott to coach inside linebackers.

Cajuns coach Billy Napier, who calls his own plays, has not yet publicly announced who’ll serve as offensive coordinator in 2021.

Discher’s successor hasn’t been named either.

The Athletic first reported Discher will work as a special teams analyst with Bulldogs special teams coordinator Scott Cochran.

Discher spent one season at UL. He previously worked four seasons as special teams coordinator and tight ends coach at Toledo, and spent two seasons from 2014-15 as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State including time as special teams coordinator.

UL special teams thrived in 2021

Under Discher, who also was a UL defensive assistant, Cajun special teams thrived in 2020.

Chris Smith ran back a kickoff for a touchdown and Eric Garror ran back a punt for a TD is a season-opening upset win at Iowa State. Smith, an All-Sun Belt Conference return man, also ran back a kickoff for a touchdown in a win at UAB. And kicker Nate Snyder’s 53-yard field goal as time expired beat Georgia Southern at Cajun Field.

Discher said he and his family “really enjoyed Lafayette/Youngsville” and that he “worked with some great coaches and more importantly we loved the players.”
