Athletics: UL Ragin’ Cajuns athletic director Bryan Maggard to receive pay raise, new title

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, June 22, 2021

The University of Louisiana System Board of Governors will vote on a contract extension and raise for  UL athletic director Bryan Maggard on Thursday.

Maggard’s new contract would raise his base salary from $295,000 to $400,000 a year and will change his  title to vice president of intercollegiate athletics, according to documents obtained by The Daily Advertiser. The new deal runs through 2026 and provides a 2.5% raise each year.

Maggard’s contract includes a $125,000 interest-bearing annuity fee and a $50,000 buyout he would pay the school if he were to leave the university for a "commensurate position" prior to the end of the deal. The $50,000 would be split in half if UL President Joseph Savoie were no longer in his current position, according to the documents.

Maggard’s current deal was extended last June to 2025.

Maggard told The Daily Advertiser in January he talked with Boise State before the Broncos filled their open AD position.

“I think anytime my name, or anyone on our staff’s name, is mentioned in a candidate pool, that is an absolute compliment to the full body of work we’re accomplishing here at Louisiana," Maggard said at the time.

The contract extension and raise comes after an announcement from the university last week of a 15-year, $15 million agreement with Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center for the naming rights to Cajun Field.

This agreement with Lourdes now allows major renovation plans announced for the stadium back in 2013 to commence.

Maggard began his tenure at UL in February of 2017. Before becoming the athletic director, he had previously been the executive associate athletic director at Missouri.

Maggard has also worked at Florida State and Kansas State, overseeing the academic support services for the football programs.
