Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team and first-year head coach Greg Harkins opened the 2011 spring season in fine fashion, posting wins over South Alabama and McNeese State on Saturday at the Cajun Courts Tennis Facility.
"I’m really proud of all the girls," said Harksins. "They worked really hard and everyone contributed. It’s tough to start with a double header out of the gate but everyone was tested and put up a tough fight." In the first match against South Alabama, UL downed the Lady Jags, 6-1, winning five of the singles matches. Milou Israel and Sandra Ahlqvist stood out in the singles competition with each posting 6-0, 6-0 wins in their respective matches. In the day’s second dual match against McNeese State, the Cajuns got off to a hot start and claimed the doubles’ point, winning all three matches. But the Cowgirls held their own in the singles. Israel, along with Julie Mazinova and Mia Gordon won their respective matches to claim the 4-3 win. Israel proved dominate in her 6-0, 6-2 win over Anastasio Surkova while Julie Mazinova cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ralista Pirdopska. Mia Gordon sealed the win after downing Marcella Castaldi, 6-1, 6-1.
