Women’s Tennis Schedule Features 14 Home Matches and SBC Championship at Cajun Courts

Contact: Jeff Schneider

LAFAYETTE, La. – Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis head coach Greg Harkins released the squad’s 2012-13 schedule on Thursday.

“This year we have a solid balance of competition that includes teams ranked in the top 75 from 2012 and most of the regional teams in our area,” Harkins said.

The schedule is one of the most balanced slates for the women’s team in the last two decades and features ranked competition throughout the fall and spring seasons.

“This fall we have six freshmen coming into the program and the 2012-13 schedule will test the team with nationally ranked competition, but is set-up to help us grow and handle the challenges of top level Division I Tennis,” Harkins added. “We look forward to lots of excitement and support from the community, parents of the players and Alumni of the program.”

The Cajuns have five tournaments on the slate for the 2012 fall schedule as they open competition at the Auburn Invitational on Sept. 7-8. The Auburn Invitational features some of the top players in the country and will be an early test.

On Oct. 5-7 the team will host the University of Louisiana Invitational at Cajun Courts.

UL also will travel to the Northwestern State Invitational (Sept. 14-15), ITA Regionals (Oct. 19-22) and the Southern Miss Invitational (Oct. 26-28) in the fall.

The spring dual match season features 14 home matches at Cajun Courts including a nine match homestand towards the end of the regular season.

The Ragin’ Cajuns open the dual match season on the road against Denver (Jan. 25) and Air Force (Jan. 26).

After four more road contests, the Cajuns begin their home season with a pair of matches starting with Southern on Feb. 18 and Alcorn State the following day. UL will face five conference foes in the spring season including La.-Monroe (3/15), North Texas (3/16), Arkansas State (3/29), Troy (3/30) and South Alabama (3/31).

“With 14 of our last 19 matches at Cajun Courts, that will give us a tremendous advantage as we prepare for the Sun Belt Conference Championships here in Lafayette on April 18-21,” Harkins noted.

The women’s tennis team will also host a Lafayette Ladies Tennis Day in March which will be open to all the local women tennis players. There will be a brunch/lunch special to thank the ladies for their support.
