Women’s Tennis: Freshmen Make Impact As Cajuns Wrap Up Fall Season At SLU Fed Cup Invite

Ortega earns three wins in singles play for Cajuns

HAMMOND – Freshmen Marina Rodriguez Garcia and Lucile Delabarre each picked up wins at the top two positions on Sunday as the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team wrapped up play at the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University.
 
Carla Ortega earned three wins in singles play for Louisiana during the three-day tournament that featured a round-robin schedule with matches consisting of four singles contests and one doubles match. Delabarre and Garcia each earned two wins in singles play for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule.

 
Delabarre claimed a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win over Laia Charles of LSU Alexandria at No. 1 singles on Friday before earning a 6-2, 7-6 win over SLU’s Lucia Bustamante at No. 2 singles on Sunday. Garcia claimed both of her wins at the No. 1 spot beginning with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Alcorn State’s Veronika Pytlikova before defeating Dany Raygadas of SLU, 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.
 
Ortega opened play on Friday with a 6-7, 6-3, 8-8 (default) win over Claudette Gilhespie of UNO at No. 4 singles and a 6-4, 6-4 victory over LSUA’s Ariadna Cabezas before claiming a 6-3, 6-2 win over Klavdija Bukovec of Alcorn State on Saturday.
 
Freshman India Shiaelis claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over LSUA’s Paula Gordillo at No. 4 singles and teamed with Delabarre in doubles play to post a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 11-9 over Alcorn State’s tandem of Marlene Maier and Bianca Birkenstock.
 
Abby Johnson and Alexandra Way each earned singles victories win a 5-0 win over Alcorn State on Saturday as Johnson defeated Natalia Parchowska, 6-4, 6-1, and Way recorded a 6-3, 4-1 (retired) win over Daria Chemodonova.
