Women’s Tennis: Cremers Leads Cajuns At Big Easy Tennis Classic

NEW ORLEANS – Freshman Julie Cremers had a good showing in her debut as the Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team wrapped up competition at the Big Easy Tennis Classic this past weekend.
 
"First off, we want to thank coach (Burzis) Kanga and the UNO Privateers for hosting the tournament," head coach Greg Harkins said. "It was a pleasure for the team to be playing in New Orleans. I thought we played well in spots, but there are some areas where we need to improve. Fall is a time to put the building blocks of success in place by working on fitness, mental toughness and team building exercises. These efforts will help prepare us for the challenges that lie ahead in the spring."
 
Cremers went 3-1 in singles competition playing in third flight. The Wanssum Limburg, Netherlands native defeated conference foe Angela Tejedor of ULM, 3-6, 6-3, (10-8), in the first round.
 
The freshman rallied off wins against Iryna Serdyuk of Nova Southeastern, 6-3, 6-2, and Yasmin Rashad of UNO, 6-3, 3-6, (10-7), to reach the semifinals. Cremers saw her run come to an end in the semifinals dropping a hard fought 6-3, 4-6, (10-6) decision to the eventual flight champion, Grace Nolan of UNO.
 
"Cremers had a nice showing in her debut as a Cajun making it to the semifinals of Flight ‘C’ singles," Harkins noted. "Three tough super-tie break matches in your first event is a nice accomplishment. She showed that she was willing to make the adjustments needed to stay competitive through each match. I am optimistic that her efforts will lead to continued success in the future."
 
Eleanor Bradshaw and Juliette Clement each picked up a singles win in flight three. Bradshaw notched an impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory over Lauren Rosales of Lamar, while Clement downed Rebeka Adewumi of Jackson State, 6-2, 6-1.
 
In doubles play, Nicole Breaux and Bradshaw teamed up to defeat the duo of Aranxtia Wijngaarde and Brankica Orlovic from Alabama State, 8-4.
 
"Overall, I was pleased with how the team represented on and off court this weekend," Harkins added. "The experience from this tournament will help us prepare for The Ragin’ Cajuns Fall Classic at the Cajun Courts in two weeks. We currently have 15 teams committed to the event and look forward to seeing our Cajun family and friends for the first time since the Sunbelt Conference Championships last spring."
