Women’s Tennis: Cajuns Pick UP Wins at Southern Regional

Greg Harkins

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Ragn’ Cajuns sent a pair of athletes to the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships over the weekend, with each advancing out of the first round in singles play in addition to splitting a pair of doubles matches on the University of Alabama campus.

Freshmen Elena Sava and Abby Johnson took part in the event, one which pitted many of the region’s top players against each other. The duo also combined in doubles play, advancing out of the round of 64 with a (8-3) win over the combo of Zarshlish/Butorina of Jackson State. That set them up against Samford’s team of N’Tcha/Ebada, who advanced past Sava/Johnson with a (8-4) decision.

"Regionals is an opportunity to play against some of the top players in
our area," UL head coach Greg Harkins said. "Elena and Abby represented well and gained experience which will help them and the team as we prepare for our next event in New Orleans."

Each also took part in the 128-player singles draw, the top draw of the tournament. Sava picked up a (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) victory over Gen Ulanday of Jacksonville State in the first round before running into Alabama’s Emily Zabor, who advanced with a (6-4, 6-3) win.

Johnson also moved out of the first round in the top half of the bracket, knocking off Jacksonville State’s Diana Mirceta (6-2, 6-3) before running into fourth-seeded Danielle Spielmann of Alabama, falling (6-0, 6-1).

The Ragin’ Cajuns will close out their fall season on Oct. 24-25 when they head to New Orleans for the UNO Big Easy Invitational.
