LAFAYETTE, La. – Newcomers Nicole Breaux and Juliette Clement led the way for the Ragin’ Cajuns women’s tennis team this past weekend at the UL Invitational as the squad had a good showing at Cajun Courts.
“Our girls worked hard and showed vast improvement from our first tournament,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “The goal is to improve each time out, and we did that this weekend. I’m proud of the way the girls battled. The team is headed in the right direction.”
Breaux was one of three UL players to post two wins in singles beating Diana Pirciu of McNeese State, 5-7, 6-1, (4), and Mackenzie Oskin of Southern Miss, 4-6, 6-3, (6).
“I was able to draw from the energy and support from our fans,” Breaux said. “They really got behind me and helped me through my matches. There is always room for improvement, but I thought we did really well.”
Clement also had two singles wins defeating Morgane Charpenne of Southeastern La., 6-4, 6-2, and Janelle Fung of Arkansas State, 6-1, 6-1.
Junior Sandra Ahlqvist went 2-1 in her singles flight after wins against Anastasia Surkova, 6-1, 6-1, and Lara Pujol, 7-6, 6-3, of McNeese State.
In doubles, senior Hannah Appleyard paired with Clement to go 2-1 in their flight. The pair opened the weekend with an 8-4 victory over Alessandra Pennesi and Dariya Dashuitina of Lamar. They then went on to defeat Biljana Milosevska and Chiara Stefanov of Arkansas State, 8-2.
“The team still has a lot of work to do to get where we need to be, but we’ve made some big strides this season,” Harkins added.
The Cajuns are back in action this weekend as they head to Natchitoches, La. for the Northwestern State Invitational.
