Women’s Basketball: Yolanda Jones named Sun Belt Player of the Week

It’s amazing what good things can happen when your team wins four straight games.

UL senior Yolanda Jones was honored as the Sun Belt Conference’s women’s basketball Player of the Week Monday, after leading the Ragin’ Cajuns to road wins at North Texas and Western Kentucky – the latter a first-ever UL win in Bowling Green.

Jones scored 20 of her game-high 30 points in the second half in Thursday’s 85-76 comeback win at UNT to go with 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals.

On Sunday, she had 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds along with five assists in the Cajuns’ surprisingly easy 77-64 win over the Lady Toppers. She had 11 of her points in the first half in helping UL take a double-digit lead.

"What can you say about the way she’s playing," said Cajun coach J. Kelley Hall. "And what that doesn’t show is the other things she’s doing … she doesn’t get enough credit for her defense, but that’s been a big part of us winning the last few games."

She averaged 23 points and 11.5 boards for the week while shooting 51.3 percent from the field, and now ranks second in the league in rebounding (9.8), sixth in scoring (16.8) and ninth in steals (1.8) heading into UL’s Wednesday Sun Belt Conference contest against South Alabama in Long Gym at 7 p.m.
