Women’s Basketball: Jaylyn Gordon Named SBC Student-Athlete of the Week

NEW ORLEANS – Fresh off matching her career-high with 29 points in an 82-78 win over Ole Miss, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns junior guard Jaylyn Gordon was named the Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office Tuesday.

Gordon is the first Cajun to earn the weekly honor since Mercedes Johnson on February 15, 2010, and is the first honoree under fourth-year head coach Garry Brodhead.

Nineteen of Gordon’s team-high 29 points came in the first half allowing the Cajuns to open a 20-point lead over the Rebels at halftime. She shot 7-of-17 from the floor (4-of-9 from three-point). The Edgard, La., native also added six rebounds (tied for team high), three assists and two steals.

"I think what is exciting for her is how hard she is working in practice," Brodhead said. "We are reiterating to our players that if you show up to practice and work hard that it will translate over to the game.

"For her to get this accolade, we are very proud of Jaylyn. We are hopeful that this success will become contagious for the rest of our players. For her to get this award after a big win on Sunday [at Ole Miss] is special."

The Cajuns return to action this Thursday, November 19 for their home opener against Southern-New Orleans for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be played at Earl K. Long Gym.
