Women’s Basketball: Hosts Dreams Come True Christmas Party

Women’s Basketball Hosts Dreams Come True Christmas Party

 Contact: Nick Ross

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball team spent their Sunday hosting the Dreams Come True of Louisiana annual Christmas party, at the Earl K. Long Gymnasium, an event for children with life-threatening illnesses in Louisiana and their families.

This is the second year the Cajuns have been involved with Dreams Come True of Louisiana.

Dreams Come True is a Louisiana-based nonprofit organization with the goal of granting dreams to local area children with life-threatening illnesses.  Every year, they host an annual Christmas party for the families of children who have had their wishes granted.

"After we do the dreams for each child, we don’t forget about them," Executive Director of DCT Becky Prejean said.  "Every year we have an annual Christmas party, which the Louisiana women’s basketball team has been so gracious to let us borrow the gym and help us out.

"These families meet for the first time, and start friendships," Prejean added.  "I have seen some awesome friendships evolve from a day like today.  With the face painting, balloons and Santa.  Each kid, including the siblings will be given a gift, because we want this to be for the whole family."

The Cajuns were on hand for entertainment, set up and take down, spending the day with the children, playing games, signing autographs and having fun.

"This is a great organization that helps some great young kids," head coach Garry Brodhead said.  "When we were approached to help this year again, we wanted to make sure they could continue what they are doing.  It is a great time of the year to bring families in and share.

"For our kids it is very special," Brodhead added.  "To see how lucky we really are in life, and to help out is a great thing.  I think that it is what the University of Louisiana is about, an that is community and service to our community.  That is why we are here is to serve our community, and that’s what we want to teach our girls."

The women’s basketball team is in the midst of their 2013-14 season, with their next home game scheduled for Dec. 19 against Alcorn State at Earl K. Long Gymnasium, tip off is 7 p.m.
