Women’s Basketball: Gordon named College Sports Madness SBC Player of the Week
Ragin’ Cajuns junior guard led the team with 29 points and added six rebounds, three assists and two blocks in victory at Ole Miss this past Sunday.
LAFAYETTE – After helping lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball program to its first victory over an SEC opponent since November of 2006, junior guard Jaylyn Gordon was named the College Sports Madness Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as announced on Monday.
A native of Edgard, La., Gordon matched her career high with 29 points in an 82-78 win in the Cajuns season opener at Ole Miss this past Sunday. She drained four three-pointers and was 11-of-15 from the free throw line. She completed her stat sheet with six rebounds (tied for team high), three assists and a pair of steals.
Nineteen of her 29 points against the Rebels came in the first half, igniting a 20-point halftime advantage.
"Jaylyn has been playing at a different level – every aspect of her game last night has been evident in how she has practiced and prepared for the season," Ragin’ Cajuns head coach Garry Brodhead said.
"Her consistency with scoring and getting others involved has shown," Brodhead added. "The way she prepares will carry over to the way she performs in games. Her confidence level right now is very high and she can continue to improve and work hard and help those around her do the same."
Gordon is the first Cajuns player to earn the honor since Keke Veal back on January 19, 2015.
The Cajuns are back in action this Thursday, November 19 when they host Southern-New Orleans in their home opener from Earl K. Long Gym. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
