Volleyball: Zimmerman Added to Volleyball Coaching Staff

Standout performer at Wichita State (indoor volleyball) and South Carolina (beach volleyball) set to launch her collegiate coaching career

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Volleyball head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot announced the addition of Katie Zimmerman as an assistant coach to the program’s coaching staff.

Zimmerman, a standout performer in indoor volleyball at Wichita State (2012-15) and beach volleyball at South Carolina (2016-17), gained coaching experience working with youth volleyball teams throughout her collegiate career.

"I’ve known Coach Heather for a while and I’m glad I get to coach alongside her now," Zimmerman stated. "I’m so excited to be a Ragin’ Cajun and can’t wait to get in the gym with the team."

She replaces Trey Cruz who left the program in December to pursue a coaching opportunity at LSU.

In addition to coaching in team camps at WSU and USC, both at the individual and team level, Zimmerman’s professional experience includes being a sports camp counselor and athletic director for Kids Across America Summer Camps in Branson, Mo.

In her time as a collegiate student-athlete, the Houston area native posted 49 wins on the beach volleyball court at South Carolina, the fifth-most wins in program history, and played 127 matches over four seasons at Wichita State compiling 911 career kills, 533 digs, 242 blocks and 94 aces.

Zimmerman helped lead WSU to the Missouri Valley Conference championship in 2013 and 2015, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and was a MVC All-Conference selection and AVCA All-American her senior campaign. In her final season at USC, she qualified for the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Pairs Championship.

"She’s an amazing player and an even better person," Mazeitis-Fontenot remarked. "Her positivity is contagious. We are excited that we are able to be the jumpstart of what will be a great career for her in college coaching."

A native of Cypress, Texas, and graduate of Concordia Lutheran High School, Zimmerman earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Wichita State in December 2015. She received a master’s degree in the field, with a specialization in rehabilitation sciences, from South Carolina in May 2017.

She is married to Parker Zimmerman of Stillwater, Okla., and is the sister of current Ragin’ Cajuns senior outside hitter Stacey Reilly.
