Volleyball: Earns AVCA Team Academic Award – Begins Practice Friday, Aug. 9Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award
LAFAYETTE, La. — On the eve of preseason practice starting for the Ragin Cajuns volleyball team, the squad was singled out nationally for its academic accomplishments when it received the AVCA Team Academic Award. The list of award winners was announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The Ragin Cajuns earned the award by maintaining a 3.30 cumulative grade point average for the team during the 2012-13 academic year.
The hard work and dedication of this volleyball team to achieve academic success is extraordinary, Louisiana head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. The young women of this volleyball program work together to tutor each other, to push each other and to do well as a whole. I am very proud of them for earning this award.
The accomplishments in the classroom is only part of the success that these young women are striving to achieve this season. I could not be more pleased with where our program is headed.
In 2012-13, the 15 members of the volleyball team qualified for the award by combining to post a 3.401 GPA during the fall and a 3.339 effort during the spring.
Eight squad members posted a GPA of 3.50 or higher during the spring, including junior Kristen Armstrong, who had a perfect 4.0.
Our student-athletes never fail to amaze me in what they are able to accomplish both on and off the playing field, Louisiana Director of Athletics Scott Farmer said. When you consider the time and effort that they put into representing the University at the highest of levels intercollegiately, their accomplishments in the classroom are astounding.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was started in 1992-93 as a way of recognizing volleyball programs at both the high school and collegiate level for maintaining academic excellence.
The Cajuns return five starters and 10 letterwinners from the 2012 squad that went 16-16 and finished in fourth place in the Sun Belt west division.
Louisiana opens practice on Friday (Aug. 9), giving them three weeks to prepare before opening the 2013 season with matches against UT-Pan American, Houston Baptist and Nebraska-Omaha at the Houston Baptist Tournament from August 30-31 in Houston.
