Volleyball: Cruz Joins Volleyball Coaching Staff

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns head volleyball coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot announced Thursday the addition of Trey Cruz to the program’s coaching staff as an assistant coach beginning in the 2015 season.

Cruz, a native of Houma, spent the previous seven seasons at LSU (2008-14). He served in the role of manager the first five seasons and video coordinator in his final two seasons with the Tigers.

During his time with the program, LSU collected four SEC West Division titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and the 2009 SEC regular season championship.

"We are thrilled to have Trey (Cruz) working with us," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "He did a fabulous job for LSU. His title there did not truly represent all of his efforts with that program."

Cruz’s primary duties with the Ragin’ Cajuns will include coordinating camps and working with the outside attackers.

"He comes in very experienced and knowledgeable about how to help direct a program," Mazeitis-Fontenot added. "Hopefully with his enthusiasm, it will be a great voice to have in the gym."

Cruz gained valuable experience as a player-coach and starting setter for LSU’s men’s club volleyball team. He helped guide the team to its first-ever appearance in the NCVF Collegiate Club National Tournament and earned all-conference honors his final season.

He accrued five years of coaching experience and worked various summer camps, which included LSU, Texas, Houston Juniors, Volleyball Baton Rouge and various high school camps across the southeast region.

Cruz guided the 16U Open Volleyball Baton Rouge squad to a first place finish at the Cross Court Classic, a fourth place finish at the President’s Day Classic, a 13th place finish at Lonestar, a 27th place finish at Big South and a 29th place finish at AAU’s during the spring of 2013. He continued coaching the group through their 17U and 18U club seasons. The squad featured current Ragin’ Cajuns Sydney Davis and Hanna Rovira.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of the UL family and look forward to the success that can be achieved," Cruz said. "Great things are happening here at UL and I want to thank Coach Mazeitis-Fontenot for this wonderful opportunity at such a thriving university."

Cruz attended Mansfield Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, where he was a four-year letterwinner in baseball under Robert Owens and student assistant/practice player for the volleyball team under Beth Wills.

He received his bachelor’s of science in sports administration, with a minor in business, from LSU in May 2013 and obtained a master’s degree in human resources and leadership development in May 2015.

Cruz is the second addition by Mazeitis-Fontenot to the Ragin’ Cajuns coaching staff for the 2015 season. He joins Jenny Andrew, formerly a member of the University of Houston staff, who was hired as associate head coach in March to assume the role vacated after Jon Haruguchi departed for an assistant coach position at Dartmouth.
