Voices of Louisiana Athletics: Peloquin named SBC Broadcaster of the YearDaily Advertiser, May 23, 2013 KPEL SportsRadio ESPN 1420 AM’s Steve Peloquin was honored Wednesday night in front of his hometown crowd in being named the Sun Belt Conference’s Broadcaster of the Year. The Broadcaster of the Year award is “presented annually to the broadcaster exhibiting the highest commitment to covering the Sun Belt Conference.” Peloquin received the award at the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship and threw out the first pitch of UL’s opener against FIU. Peloquin successfully continued his groundbreaking coverage of college softball this season as for a second straight season he provided play-by-play and analysis of all Ragin’ Cajuns softball games both regular season and postseason. His efforts make ESPN 1420 AM one of the few commercial-based radio stations in the nation to broadcast an entire collegiate softball schedule. In 2012, he was the driving force in UL becoming the first Sun Belt school – and one of a small handful nationally – to broadcast every softball game live in 2012. This has since led to other media markets across the country – such as University of Alabama – to have their entire softball season broadcast on commercial radio. Peloquin was able to accomplish this by his willingness to go the extra mile and obtain the sponsorships to make the softball broadcast schedule a possibility for the University. Peloquin was also the sideline reporter alongside Jay Walker for all Cajuns’ football games and occasionally fills in for Walker at Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball and baseball broadcasts. He continued his coverage of Ragin’ Cajuns women’s basketball – now a decade-long running – and expanded this season to include select road games. Peloquin also hosts a two-hour morning radio show, “Thinking Out Loud," in which the Cajuns and the Sun Belt Conference are almost always the center of discussion. ![]()
