UL offers Rose Garden dorm bricks as keepsakes – Evangeline, Baker-Huger & Bonin Halls will go

Daily Advertiser, Associated Press, Sept. 26, 2011

LAFAYETTE — Women who attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and called the Rose Garden home can buy a piece of their demolished dormitory.

The Rose Garden dorms — Evangeline Hall, Baker-Huger Hall and Bonin Hall — are being demolished to make way for new student housing, and a limited number of commemorative bricks are available for $100, The Advocate reported.

Baker-Huger Hall and Evangeline Hall no longer stand. Demolition crews razing Bonin Hall should be finished within the next two weeks, said William Crist, the university’s facility management director.

Each brick being offered bears a commemorative plate with the names of the three dorms and their operational dates, said David Comeaux, interim development director.

"It’s really an opportunity to give people a memento that gives them good memories of their college days," Comeaux said.

Those interested in the commemorative bricks must contact the university’s development office by Oct. 28 at 337-482-0922 or by email at gift@louisiana.edu

Proceeds will buy for supplies such as microwaves, furniture or other needs for the new residence halls, he said.

The three older dorms are being replaced by two new buildings that can house 882 students.

Louisiana-Lafayette President Joseph Savoie has said the names of the demolished dorms will adorn new buildings on campus.

The construction project for the Rose Garden area also includes the renovations of Harris Hall, which will house 122 students, and Randolph Hall, which will become a student activity and learning center.

Buchanan Hall, the oldest building in the Rose Garden, will be used as flexible campus office space, the university has said.
