Track & Field: School-Records Fall As Louisiana Wraps Up Sun Belt Indoor

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Louisiana’s Dominique Williams claimed men’s weight throw honors for the second straight year with a school-record mark while the women’s 4×400-meter relay team broke a 24-year-old school record as the Ragin’ Cajuns Track and Field team wrapped up action on Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.
Louisiana finished in fourth place on the men’s side with 87.5 points while the women’s team scored 29 of its 31 points on the final day to finish ninth. Arkansas State swept the team titles with UT Arlington finishing second in the men’s field and Troy as the women’s runner-up.
Williams, Chandler Mixon (men’s heptathlon), Yves Cherubin (men’s 60-meter dash) and freshman Emoni Coleman (women’s 800-meter run) each earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors in their respective events for Louisiana while the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Brock Appiah, Solomon Brent, Nathan Fergusson and Cherubin earned third-place honors after posting a time of 3:18.42.
Williams, who claimed last year’s title in the weight throw with a mark of 65 feet, 6 inches, became the first Ragin’ Cajuns athlete to eclipse the 70-foot mark with a throw of 70-0 ¼ and breaking the previous record (69-0 ¾) that was set by All-American Justin Victor in 2014.
Louisiana capped off the day with a school-record in the women’s final event as the 4×400 relay team of India Brown, Reina Ryan, Emoni Coleman and Ta’La Spates clocked a time of 3:48.06 to finish fourth overall and break the previous Ragin’ Cajuns school-record (3:48.53) set in 1996 by the quartet of Janice Johnson, D’Nais Jones, Beverley Langley and Sheronia Walker.
Mixon, who finished second overall in the men’s pole vault on Monday, finished second overall in the men’s heptathlon for Louisiana, scoring 5,307 points. The junior added an eighth-place finish for Louisiana in the men’s 60-meter hurdles after posting a time of 8.64 seconds.
Rylan Theyard (men’s high jump, triple jump) and Terroll Jolla (men’s 60-meter dash, 200-meters) each scored in a pair of events for Louisiana with Theyard finishing fourth in the high jump (6-9 ¾) and eighth in the triple jump (48-2 ¾).
Jolla clocked a time of 6.90 seconds to finish fifth overall in the 60-meter dash while crossing the line in 21.69 in the 200 meters to finish seventh. Cherubin (8.07) finished second overall for Louisiana in the 60-meter hurdles with Nathan Fergusson finishing fifth in the 400 meters (47.67) and Appiah fifh in the 200 meters (21.65).
John Joseph earned a fifth-place finish for Louisiana in the men’s triple jump (49-8 ¼) and Damon Guidry was eighth overall in the high jump (6-6 ¾).
Coleman earned All-SBC honors as a freshman after her time of 2:14.78 in the women’s 800-meters was third overall. Another freshman – Kennedy London – finished sixth overall for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the 60-meter hurdles (9.00).
Louisiana had two athletes finish in the top eight in both the women’s high jump and pole vault with freshman Taylor Davis finishing fifth in the high jump (5-6 ½). Frankie Griffin added a sixth-place finish for Louisiana in the high jump (5-6 ½) with Reagann Leleux (12-1 ½) and Kimmie Rushford (12-1 ½) finishing fifth and seventh respectively in the pole vault.
Louisiana will officially open its outdoor season on March 14 when it travels to Lake Charles for the McNeese Cowboy Relays.
