Track & Field: Robinson Sets School Record In 10K; Cajuns Shine At Louisiana Classics

 
LAFAYETTE – Beau Robinson posted the fastest time in school history in the men’s 10,000-meter run and the trio of Alexandra Harrell, Kaitlyn Moreau and Jasmin Fusilier placed themselves in contention for the women’s heptathlon title to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team after the first day of the annual Louisiana Classics on Friday at the Ragin’ Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.

The final day of competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the completion of the heptathlon with field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Running events will start at 2 p.m., concluding with the men’s 4×400-meter relay at 7:45 p.m.

Robinson recorded a time of 30:56.75 to break the previous school-record of 31:03.40 set in 1988 by Leonard O’Regan. Robinson clocked his fastest times of the 25-lap race on his final two laps (1:11.41 on Lap 24; 1:06.25 on Lap 25) to easily outdistance the field. Teammate Sean Bezdek posted a personal-best time of 32:27.01 to finish third and help pace the Ragin’ Cajuns after the first day.

Bartul Basic finished as the top collegian in the men’s javelin after posting a mark of 212 feet to earn second-place honors. Cody Nickel (183-1) finished ninth for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Hunter Stelly (182-0) finishing 10th.

Harrell (3,108 points), Moreau (3,055) and Fusilier (2,969) were second through fourth place after the four events in the women’s heptathlon with Alex Morrow (2,515) eighth. Harrell finished first in both the high jump (5-6) and 200-meters (25.07) for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Moreau claiming top honors in the shot put with a throw of 40-11 ½.

Tisay Woodhouse earned a third-place finish in the women’s hammer throw for Louisiana, recording a toss of 167-1 with Amie Leitko finishing eighth (156-0). In the women’s javelin, Chelcie Sonnier finished third overall with a throw of 124-2 while Madison Meche was fifth at 122-5.

Bismarck Ebiweh earned a 10th-place finish in men’s 200 meters (21.93) with Kayla Thompson finishing ninth overall in the women’s 200-meters (24.93).
