Track & Field: Pearce, Devitt Pace Ragin’ Cajuns At McNeese 6K RelaysMatt Sullivan, August 31, 2013 Freshmen show great strides in season-opener LAKE CHARLES – Freshman Logan Pearce made an impressive debut in his first meet with the Ragin’ Cajun cross country team while Anna Katherine Devitt picked up where she left off from last season as Louisiana competed in the McNeese State 6K Relay on Friday at the Ward 3 Multisports Complex. Pearce, a West Monroe native who finished second overall at the 2012 Louisiana State Cross Country Meet, his half of the 6K event in 9:19 to post the best time for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Jacob Chicola (9:34), Corbett Ourso (9:41), Matthew Rice (9:50), Trey Bonin (9:58), Cole Stafford (10:05), Scott Brewster (10:05) and Sean Bezdek (10:20) all competed in the Ragin’ Cajuns season opener. Devitt, who was selected as the 2012 Louisiana Sports Writers Association Freshman of the Year, led the Ragin’ Cajuns on the women’ side covering her part of the course in 11:20. Freshman Claire Hodges was right behind Devitt finishing in 11:29 with Ashley Irwin (11:54), Danielle Castaldi (11:55), Courtney Musgrove (12:32), Kaylei Esfeller (12:46), Camille Barnett (13:08) and Jessica Donald (13:50) rounding out the eight-member field. "Overall, I thought it was a successful meet and it gave us a chance to see where we are as a team," head coach Lon Badeaux said. "I was pleased with how our freshmen ran today; they are further along than we thought and I was pleased with some of our veteran runners who took a step forward and ran very well." McNeese State claimed the men’s race while Lamar captured the women’s event. Louisiana will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 14 when it travels to Mobile, Ala., to compete in the Azalea City Classic, hosted by South Alabama.
