Track & Field: Nine Cajuns Headed To NCAA East Regional

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team will send nine members to compete in the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round that begins on Thursday at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.

 

 

Action begins on Thursday with field events at 11 a.m. CDT, with running events slated for 3:30 p.m. The meet will continue on Friday beginning at 9 a.m., before concluding on Sunday. Live results, courtesy of UNF, will be available on www.RaginCajuns.com.

 

 

Senior Albert Fournette leads a group of six Cajuns competing on the men’s side. The Sun Belt Conference champion ranks fourth in the East region with a school- and SBC-record throw of 65 feet, 11 inches. The Cajuns will have a pair of athletes competing in the men’s long jump, highlighted by Devin Davis, who ranks 10th regionally (25-3.5) and Micah Thomas, who is 46th (24-3). Morgan Cormier will compete in the 400-meter hurdles after ranking 48th in the region (52.32).

 

 

Senior Michael Vani will compete in the pole vault after ranking 17th overall at 17 feet, 1.5 inches. Freshman Dionte Heath rounds out the Cajuns  group on the men’s side as he competes in the high jump after ranking 54th in the region (6-9.75).

 

 

Junior Tia Mitchell is one of three Ragin’ Cajuns competing on the women’s side, where she will be joined by senior Tarvia Conway and Lafayette’s Lindsey Harmon.

 

 

Mitchell, who posted a season-high mark in the long jump at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, is ranked 15th regionally at 20-7. Conway, ranked 28th regionally in the triple jump, posted a mark of 42-0.75 at the Sun Belt Conference Championships with Harmon ranked 31st after posting a season-high mark (5-9.25) at the league championships.
