Track & Field: Louisiana Claims Three First-Place Titles In Meets At McNeese, HoustonRagin’ Cajuns with 14 top-3 finishes in split squad action

LAFAYETTE – Kimmie Rushford and freshman Cammi Martinez took home first-place honors in the women’s pole vault and Rylan Theyard claimed the men’s triple jump to lead the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Track and Field team in a pair of meets on Friday. Competing at the McNeese Indoor II, the trio were among 14 top-3 finishes on the day as the Ragin’ Cajuns also sent part of the team to the Houston Indoor Invitational. MCNEESE INDOOR II Rushford and Martinez each cleared 11 feet, 9 ¾ inches to claim first-place honors for Louisiana with Theyard posting a mark of 46-11 in the men’s triple jump to claim the indoor title. John Joseph finished second overall in the men’s long jump (23-1 ¾) as Louisiana placed six athletes in the top eight in the final results. Obdarius Ware (23-1 ¾) was third for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Joshua Mason (22-3) finishing fifth, Theyard (22-2 ½) sixth and Chandler Mixon (21-10 ¼) eighth. Damon Guidry earned a second-place finish in the men’s high jump for Louisiana, clearing 6-2 ¾. Mason added a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 44-4 while freshman Beau Gremillion was fourth in the men’s shot put (40-9 ¾). Three members – Kaprecia Cowans, Frankie Griffin and Taylor Davis – each finished third in their respective events. Cowans cleared 18-5 ¾ in the women’s long jump with Reagann Leleux finishing eighth (18-0 ½). Griffin cleared 5-3 in the women’s high jump with Davis posting a mark of 37-4 ½ in the women’s triple jump. Shonita Brome posted a time of 2:24.67 in the women’s 800-meters to finish second overall for Louisiana with Key Alfred setting a personal-best in the men’s Mile Run (4:28.72) and Rashid Reese fourth in the 800-meters (2:03.12). HOUSTON G5 & SUPER 22 INVITATIONAL Freshman Ta’La Spates set a personal-best in the women’s 400-meters, posting a time of 57.17 to finish third overall for Louisiana. Nathan Fergusson was third overall in the men’s 400-meters (48.71) for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Tahj Whitfield placing eighth overall in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (8.09). Terroll Jolla earned a 10th-place finish in the men’s 60-meters with a time of 6.87 seconds for Louisiana with Yves Cherubin finishing ninth overall in the 60-meter hurdles (8.15). Freshman Kennedy London posted a time of 8.91 in the women’s 60-meter hurdles to finish 16th. Louisiana will return to action on Feb. 14 when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., for the Samford Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
