Track & Field: Gonzales Tabbed As Sun Belt Field Athlete Of The WeekNEW ORLEANS � A record-setting performance last week by Louisiana Ragin� Cajuns track and field standout Wes Gonzales was highlighted on Wednesday when he was named the Sun Belt Conference men�s field athlete of the week in a release by the league office.
Gonzales, a senior from New Orleans, earned the award after setting a school-record in the decathlon last week at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos, Texas. Gonzales set personal-bests in seven events and scored a school-record 7,033 points to finish as the top Division I competitor in the three-day meet.
The point total for Gonzales is the best in the Sun Belt Conference and the 13th-best in the nation this season.
Individually, Gonzales claimed the 400-meter dash and finished in a first-place tie in both the high jump and pole vault. He set personal-bests in the 100-meters (11.15), 400-meters (49.60), 1,500-meters (4:50.63), 110-meter hurdles (14.97), high jump (6-2), long jump (22-9) and javelin (171-3).
UT Arlington�s Ryan Tilotta was named the Sun Belt Conference men�s track athlete of the week. Georgia State�s Niamh Kearney was named the women’s track athlete of the week while South Alabama’s Bobbie Williamson picked up the women’s field athlete of the week honor.
