Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns sophomore Albert Fournette shattered his own school record in the shot put on Thursday at the NCAA East Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Round held at Indiana University to advance to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on June 8-11.

Fournette and teammate Jacob Domingue both passed their first flight before advancing to the final 24.

A native of New Orleans, Fournette threw a distance of 59-3 ½ (18.07m), breaking his previous school record of 57-7 ¾ (17.57m) set at the NSU Invitational in April. The toss was good enough for 10th and placed Fournette in the National Final on Friday, June 10 at Drake Stadium.

For the senior Domingue, he narrowly missed a national qualifying mark after a toss of 58-3 (17.75m) to place 14th in the competition. UL’s Myles Melancon also competed on Thursday, throwing a distance of 48-11 (14.91m).

"This is a big turning point for our throwing program," said UL volunteer assistant coach Dr. David Bellar. "We were only one of three programs to have multiple athletes in the shot put finals. Albert came out strong in that round. Our program is moving in the right direction and we have young guys that are only going to get better."

A two-time All-Sun Belt honoree, Fournette is the first UL athlete to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships since Lawrence Willis in 2004.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have three athletes participating in events on Friday. Jasmine Manuel and O’Daylon Thibeaux will compete in the triple jump, while Jasmine Anderson will run in the 100-meter hurdles. Domingue participates in the discus throw on Saturday afternoon.

Live results and video of the NCAA East Preliminary Round will be available online at NCAA.com.
