Track & Field: Five Ragin’ Cajuns Qualify For NCAA East Preliminary

Carter, Heath set to make third appearance at regional

LAFAYETTE – Five member of the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team qualified for the NCAA East Region Preliminary as the NCAA announced the participants for the 2017 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships preliminary competitions.
 
Sprinter Hanoj Carter, high jumpers Dionte Heath and Damon Guidry, triple jumper Ricky Theyard and javelin thrower Hunter Stelly all qualified for the meet, scheduled for May 25-27 in Lexington, Ky. Each event qualified 48 individuals, with the top 12 finishers advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Eugene, Ore., June 7-10.  
 
Carter, who will make his third straight appearance in the NCAA East Preliminary, finished second overall in both the 100- and 200-meter dash at last week’s Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Shreveport native finished 14th regionally in the 100-meters (10.19) and 23rd in the 200-meters (20.67).
 
Heath, who claimed the Sun Belt Conference title last week in the men’s high jump, will make his third trip to the NCAA East Preliminary after qualifying in 2014 and 2015. The DeRidder native is ranked seventh in the region and ninth nationally after clearing 7-2 ½. Guidry, who is ranked 20th in the NCAA East Region in the high jump, will make his debut after clearing 7-0 ¼ earlier this season at the McNeese Spring Time Classic.
 
Theyard, ranked No. 21 in the NCAA East Region in the triple jump, will make his debut in the event after claiming the Sun Belt Conference title with a career-best mark of 51-9 ¾. Stelly, who earned a second-place finish in the javelin behind teammate Bartul Basic, is ranked 45th in the NCAA East Region after recording a throw of 209-8 earlier this season at the McNeese Cowboy Relays.
