Track & Field: Davis, Heath, Driskell Pace Cajuns At LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE – The trio of Devin Davis, Dionte Heath and Meredith Driskell each turned in first-place performances and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team officially opened its 2015 indoor season on Friday in the LSU Invitational at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse.
Davis, who finished second in the long jump at last year’s Sun Belt Conference Championships, claimed the men’s long jump with a mark of 24 feet, 3 inches with Heath claiming the men’s high jump at 6-9 ¾. In the women’s pole vault, Driskell earned a first-place finish after clearing the bar at 12-2.
"I was pretty excited with our performance at the meet," Louisiana head coach Lon Badeaux said. "We were a little rusty and made plenty of mistakes in the technical events, but we were still able to put up some really solid performances."
Morgan Cormier was part of three second-place finishes for Louisiana on the men’s side after competing in the men’s 60-meter hurdles (8.22) and running the anchor of the Ragin’ Cajuns 4×400-meter relay team (3:23.26). In the triple jump, Ricky Theyard opened his 2015 campaign with a mark of 48-11 ¾.
Kenneth Nassar earned a third-place finish for Louisiana in the men’s shot put (52-3 ¼), Matthew Rice placed third in the 800-meter run (1:56.20) with pole vaulter Matt Wilson (15-7 ¼) and long jumper Micah Thomas (22-5 ½) finishing fourth in their respective events.
Tia Mitchell added a second-place finish in the women’s long jump (18-2 ½) with Lindsey Harmon placing third in the high jump (5-6) and Danielle Castaldi earning a third-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:13.94).
Louisiana will return to action on Friday (Jan. 16) when it travels to College Station, Texas to compete in the Aggie 13-Team Invitational.
