Track & Field: Cajuns Pick Up Three Individual Titles On Final Day Of A-State Invite

JONESBORO, Ark. – Newcomer Angus Sinclair claimed the men’s heptathlon title while Jeryl Brazil and Tyler Hughes each claimed individual titles to pace the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns indoor track and field team at the A-State Invitational that concluded on Saturday at the ASU Convocation Center. Danielle Castaldi (800-meters), Claire Hodges (1-mile run) and Taylor Walker (triple jump) each picked up second-place finishes in women’s competition for the Ragin’ Cajuns with Courtney Musgrove finishing third overall in the 5,000-meters, Alena Hrusoci placing fourth in the 400-meters and Anna Devitt fourth in the 1-mile run. Sinclair, who held the first-day lead in the heptathlon, finished with 5,024 points to finish ahead of A-State’s Clint Ligon (4,842) and David Phillips (4,760). The transfer from Mount Olive (N.C.) College, finished in a tie for first in the pole vault (13-7 ¼) and was second in the 55-meter hurdles (8.29) and third in the 1,000-meter run (3:00.01). Franz Beyer finished fifth overall (4,194) for the Ragin’ Cajuns with freshman Kaden Frasier seventh (3,705). Brazil, making his 2016 debut, posted the second-fastest time (6.34) in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash before clocking a time of 6.23 – .02 seconds off the school-record set by Pat Edmond in 1980 – to claim the title. Hughes gave Louisiana its third individual title of the day after clocking a time of 7.54 in the 55-meter hurdles and edging Little Rock’s Zodani Francois (7.56) and Andre Hewitt of Grambling (7.57). Beau Robinson was one of five Cajuns to finish in the top nine of the men’s 5,000-meter run after he crossed the line in 15:04.79 to finish third overall. Bryce Robinson (15:31.51) was fifth, followed by Corbett Ourso (6th, 15:32.65), Sean Bezdek (7th, 15:37.65) and Dylan Heck (9th, 16:19.28). Dionte Heath earned a third-place finish in the high jump as he cleared the bar at 6-6. Kyle Baudoin finished fourth overall in the pole vault (16-4 ¾) with Tristan Whitehall finishing fourth in the shot put (55-11) and Ricky Theyard fifth in the triple jump (46-11 ¾). Castaldi recorded a second-place finish for the Ragin’ Cajuns in the women’s 800-meters (2:20.55) with Lindsay LeGarde finishing seventh (2:27.69). Hodges crossed the final line in the 1-mile run in 5:15.42 to finish second overall with Devitt finishing fourth (5:19.65) and freshman Hailey Hesterman seventh (5:22.68). In the women’s 5,000-meter run, Musgrove posted a time of 18:11.84 to finish third overall for Louisiana while Hrusoci placed fourth overall in the 400-meters with a time of 58.17. Walker earned a second-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 39-6 ½ while Lindsey Harmon was sixth in the high jump (5-1 ¼) and Tisay Woodhouse eighth in the shot put (43-6). Louisiana will return to action on Friday (Jan. 29) when it travels to Lake Charles to compete in the McNeese State Invitational at the Ralph O. Ward Rec Complex on the McNeese campus. The meet will begin at 1 p.m.
