LAFAYETTE – Ragin’ Cajuns track and field standout Albert Fournette turned in a career-and school-record performance last weekend at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and on Wednesday was rewarded with Sun Belt Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors from the league office.

Fournette, coming off an NCAA Outdoor Regionals appearance in the shot put, took to the field for the first time this outdoor season at the Texas Relays and landed a toss of 19.39m/63-7 1/2, placing him third, which shattered his previous outdoor best of 18.07m/59-3.5.

The junior set a new school outdoor record and also eclipsed his career personal best of 19.33m/63-5 which came during the 2012 indoor season at the LSU Twilight on Feb. 17.

The New Orleans native has now recorded a distance of 60-plus feet in five consecutive events dating back to the indoor season.

The award marks the second straight week as Cajuns athlete picked up a weekly honor from the Sun Belt Conference. Last week, Jasmine Manuel was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week following a long jump distance of 6.17m/20-3 at the LSU Relays.

Fournette picked up his second career SBC weekly honor. He was named Field Athlete of the Week on April 19, 2011, following a then-school record in the shot put with a distance of 57-7 ¾ (17.57m) at the Leon Johnson NSU Invitational in Natchitoches.

Fournette currently tops the Sun Belt Conference Performance list with his Texas Relays performance. The mark is nearly eight feet further than the next SBC competitor (Arkansas State’s Richard Chavez – 17.02m/55-10 1/4).

The Ragin’ Cajuns take a weekend off from action, then return to the track on Saturday, April 14 participating in the Mississippi Open hosted by Ole Miss in Oxford, Miss.
