Track and Field: Second Weekend of Indoor Season Features Three More Titles 1/22/12

Blue Raiders Invitational Complete Results

The Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field teams second weekend of indoor competition took place on Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tenn., at the Blue Raider Invitational and featured a freshman picking up another individual title and a veteran picking up where he left off from the outdoor season a year ago.

Freshman Joshua Sigler collected his second long jump title in as many weeks as the claimed the Blue Raider Invite title with a leap of 7.23m/23-8 ¾. Sigler debuted last weekend at McNeese with a mark of 7.36m/24-1 ¾.

Albert Fournette, who set a school outdoor record in the shot put and advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships last June, made his 2012 indoor season debut on Saturday at the Murphy Center and turned in a toss of 17.93m/58-10 to win the event. Fournette’s nearest collegiate competitor, WKU’s Brad Wright, finished nearly six feet behind him (16.18m/53-1).

Louisiana’s other individual title came in the women’s 800 meter run as Petrona Layne claimed top honors in the event with a time of 2:18.64.

Adding in the three titles at the Blue Raider Invitational, the Ragin’ Cajuns have posted seven individual titles over the past two weekends in the first season under the direction of head coach and UL alumnus Lon Badeaux

“I was really pleased with the results from the meet,” Badeaux remarked. “I felt like we competed well across the board and were able to get a feel for the track that the conference meet will be held while running up against some conference competition.

“Overall the kids responded with three conference-leading performances and one school record in the women’s weight throw,” Badeaux added. “We still have some work to do, but overall it was a successful weekend.”

The Cajuns were joined at the meet by fellow Sun Belt foes Middle Tennessee, Troy (women only) and Western Kentucky.

Other highlights for UL in the field events included a pair of athletes finishing as the top collegians in their specific event. In the women’s triple jump, Jasmine Manuel’s first leap of the 2012 season reached 12.70m/41-8 and was the top collegiate mark. In the men’s triple jump, O’Daylon Thibeaux’s distance of 15.38m/50-5 ½ was his indoor best and the top mark.

Manuel, who was making her indoor season debut, placed third in the women’s long jump at 5.94m/19-6 and was only three inches behind WKU’s Jade Nimmo for top collegiate mark in that event.

Brittany Blunt, a junior college transfer from Coffeyville CC, recorded the women’s weight throw school record for the Cajuns as he notched a toss of 16.66m/54-8 to finish second in the event.

On the track, Louis Stevens and Keyondrick Boykins both qualified for the men’s 55 meter hurdles finals and Justin Jones qualified for the 55 meter dash finals. Jones’ time of 6.43 seconds in the preliminaries was his indoor best.

April Colomb was right behind Layne in the women’s 800 meter run finishing third with a time of 2:19.57. Colomb and Layne beat out 10 other Sun Belt Conference runners in the event.

Justin Jones finished third in the men’s 200 meter dash clocking in at 22.36 seconds for a time that currently ranks Top 10 on the SBC performance list.

The Cajuns sent out relay teams for the 4×400 yard relay with the “A” group consisting of Stacey Imagbe, Krystal Chevis, Jasmin Fusilier and Amanda Roberts posting the team’s best time on the women’s side at 4:06.40.
