Track and field: Lafayette’s Richard heads to National Senior GamesBruce Brown • bbrown@theadvertiser.com • July 31, 2009 Lafayette’s Charlie Richard will leave today for Palo Alto, Calif., where he will compete in the National Senior Games track and field competition hosted by Stanford University. Richard, who is in his final year of action in the 70-74 age group, is one of the most decorated Senior Olympic athletes in Louisiana. Since 1990 he has been a prominent figure in both the long jump and triple jump at both Senior and Masters meets. He owns a string of six consecutive gold medals in the long jump at the National Senior Games, with a silver, gold and silver in the years preceding his current streak in the event. Richard also excels in the triple jump, which was added to Senior Games events in 2007. His victory that year established a record in the 70-74 age group in the first-time event. "We’re going by train this year," Richard said. "I knew I didn’t want to fly, and I’ve driven to Nationals for years. We decided to do something different this time. We’ll take a train to Los Angeles and then rent a car and drive up the coast to the Bay area." The Crowley native and former standout at SLI (now UL) has also qualified in four other events – the 100 and 200-meter dashes, hammer throw and javelin – but scheduling conflicts at the games may force him to make a decision. "I’ll have to see what the schedule has," Richard said. "It’s good to qualify in those other events, but the jumps are my strongest events and everything else will depend on times for those events."
