Track and Field: Fournette and Roy Set Records in Final Pre-Conference Meet

LSU Twilight Meet Results
The Ragin’ Cajuns men’s and women’s track and field squads recently wrapped up the 2012 indoor regular season schedule at the LSU Twilight meet on Friday at the at the Carl Maddox Field House on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge.
The highlight of the Cajuns final pre-conference championships meet was record-setting performances by Albert Fournette (shot put) and Chris Roy (pole vault).
Fournette set the school indoor track record in the shot put for the second consecutive week. A week after recording a distance of 18.54m/60-10 which broke the previous record of 60-8.5 set by Robert Sippio in 1985, Fournette rewrote the record again with a toss of 19.33m/63-5.
Fournette is the current Sun Belt leader in the shot put, outdistancing the second-best mark of 17.02m/55-10 ¼ held by Arkansas State’s Richard Chavez by nearly eight feet. He will now pursue his first Sun Belt Championships title in the event when UL participates in the conference meet Feb. 25-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Roy notched his first vault of 17-plus feet this season, reaching 5.38m/17-7 ¾ to claim the LSU Twilight title. Roy picked up his third first-place finish of the season and broke the school record of 17-7 ¼ that he set in the 2010 SBC Indoor Championships. His clearance was more than 7 inches above his nearest competitor.
“It was a pretty good pre-conference meet for us,” head coach Lon Badeaux remarked. “Albert (Fournette) and Chris (Roy) both had performances that will probably get them into the National Championships.
“There were many personal bests and season bests, so I feel we are peaking at the right time.”
Fournette’s shot put effort currently ranks as eighth-best in the nation and Roy’s pole vault height is currently No. 13 on the NCAA 2012 indoor performance list.
Freshman Sander Maes was the top collegian in the men’s high jump with a height of 2.06m/6-9. He matched the height of unattached Cedric Norman, but Norman won on fewer misses.
Zach France came in second in the men’s 3,000 meter run with a season-best time of 9:05.19. In the women’s 3,000 meter run freshman Jolee Bonneval clocked in at a season-best 11:27.21 which placed her fourth.
The women’s 4×400 meter relay squad consisting of Jasmin Fusilier, Krystal Chevis, Stacy Imagbe and Amanda Roberts turned in team’s best time in the event at 3:54.43 which was just shy of the school record 3:48.53 set back in 1996.
Junior college transfer Brittany Blunt recorded her third distance of 50-plus feet in the women’s weight throw this season, by accruing a distance of 16.81m/55-2. The distance was her season best and is currently the seventh-best throw in the Sun Belt.
Freshman Joshua Sigler leaped 7.30m/23-11 ½ in the long jump for a fourth place finish in the event. He just came up short of his season best 7.36m/24-1 ¾ recorded at the McNeese Cowboy Indoor (Jan. 13).
Tarvia Conway placed second in the women’s triple jump with a 38-11 effort. Freshman Stacy Imagbe’s new season best of 5.75m/18-10 ½ was the Cajuns’ highlight in the women’s long jump.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
Head coach Lon Badeaux and his troops will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships being held Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 25-26 at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.
The Cajuns have already won 15 individual championships in Badeaux’s first season and seek to add to that total. The Cajuns have a pair defending conference indoor champions headed to Murfreesboro: Myles Melancon (shot put) and Jasmine Manuel (triple jump).
