Track and Field: Fournette and Manuel Wrap Up Strong Season at NCAA Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa – Albert Fournette recorded a shot put toss during Saturday’s action at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships that will earn him second team All-America honors, highlighting the Ragin’ Cajuns performances in the event held at Drake Stadium.

The Sun Belt Conference champion’s top measurement of 18.59m/61-0 came on this third and final attempt of the morning, but the New Orleans native was unable to advance to the nine-man final.

Fournette finished 13th out of the 24 shot put competitors who advanced to Des Moines. Athletes who finish ninth through 16th in an event are awarded second team All-America honors.

Saturday’s performance allowed Fournette to redeem himself after failing to record a mark by fouling in all three attempts during his visit to the national meet in 2011.

Fournette reached 60-plus feet in a meet for the eighth time this season.

Senior Jasmine Manuel was in action alongside Fournette on Saturday, but her bid for first or second team All-America honors fell short.

Manuel placed 17th in the women’s triple jump, registering her placing measurement of 12.82m/42-0 ¾ on her third and final attempt. The Hammond native, making her NCAA Outdoor Championships debut, had committed a foul on each of her first two jumps.

Manuel did manage to sail past 40-plus feet for the ninth time in 2012 (adding in indoor performances), capping off a strong senior campaign in the triple jump.

Both Fournette and Manuel were the lone representatives of a Louisiana school in their respective events.

They both made their second national championships appearance of 2012, as both participated in the indoor event held in Nampa, Idaho back in March.

Saturday’s action brought to a close the inaugural season for Ragin’ Cajuns Track and Field under the direction of head coach Lon Badeaux. The UL alum’s debut season featured three indoor All-Americans, numerous individual event champions, a runner-up finish for the men’s squad at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships, Sun Belt Outdoor Men’s Coach of the Year honors, a total of 15 participants in the NCAA Outdoor Preliminary round and a pair of outdoor All-Americans.
