Track and Field: Brazil Named SBC Male Track Athlete Of The Week

Jeryl Brazil

Sprinter posts SBC’s top time in men’s 55-meters

NEW ORLEANS – After posting the Sun Belt Conference’s top time in the 55-meter dash this season, Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track student-athlete Jeryl Brazil was named on Wednesday as the league’s Male Track Student-Athlete of the Week.

Brazil, a redshirt sophomore from Loranger, made his 2016 debut last week at the A-State Invitational and claimed the individual title in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.23, a mark that was .02 seconds off the school-record set by Pat Edmond in 1980.

Brazil qualified for the finals after posting the second-fastest time (6.34) in the preliminaries. The winning time – which was converted to a 6.70 in the 60-meters – is the fastest time recorded by a Sun Belt athlete this season and the 17th fastest nationally.

Louisiana will return to action on Friday when it competes at the McNeese State Invitational in Lake Charles.
