The scoop on New Orleans from Daniel Quave

Tim Buckley, The Advertiser, December 18, 2012

The redshirt sophomore starts at guard on the UL offensive line along, as does his brother Mykhael Gautier. Both are from Gautier, Miss., about 100 miles from New Orleans. But they know the city because their father used to work there.

Best thing about New Orleans: The food and the music. I love the music. I’m not a party-type guy, so I couldn’t say Bourbon (Street). Bourbon (Street) is nice, but that’s not my type of party.

Worst thing about New Orleans: After last year, I don’t have any complaints.

Favorite on-field New Orleans Bowl moment (besides Brett Baer’s game-winning field goal): The referee giving us the plus-5 (on an illegal stemming penalty before Baer’s kick) — because that was me that jumped. That’s the moment right there.

Favorite off-field New Orleans Bowl experience: The practices. There was a different vibe about it. The practices in the (Super)dome — it was a different mindset, because it was becoming reality, and at that moment, I felt like that’s where we meshed together and we could overcome anything, and we really could leave New Orleans with a W.

What would you rename the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets if not the Pelicans: The Bumblebees. Naw — I wouldn’t name them no Bumblebees. I don’t know what I would name them. But I guess you can say Bumblebees is OK.

Favorite all-time New Orleans Saint: I’d have to say McAllister. Big Deuce. I love Big Deuce.

Will Sean Payton coach the Saints next season? Yes.

Favorite New Orleans restaurant: I don’t know the name of it, but my daddy used to take me and my brother (Cajuns starting right guard Mykhael Quave) there when we were little. The used to give us seafood platters — I mean food on top of food. It was so much food.

Gumbo or jambalaya? Jambalaya.

Crawfish: Suck the heads, or no? I really don’t like crawfish. I never have, and I don’t think I ever will unless somebody shows me the correct way to eat it. I’d be guessing on how to eat it.

One thing Cajuns fans should not miss while in New Orleans: The game.
