Tennis: Men Win 20th Match at Coastal Carolina; Women Fall to Coastal Carolina at Home

Louisiana Gets 20th Win, With Hard-Fought Victory At Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. – In search of its Sun Belt Conference leading 20th win of the season, Louisiana Men’s Tennis (20-7, 2-2 SBC), needed every point it could get, locking up the 4-3 victory over Coastal Carolina (12-7, 2-2 SBC), with a commanding performance in both singles and doubles in a Sunday morning conference match at the Stevens Tennis Complex.

Louisiana locked up the match with a pair of doubles wins to take the doubles point and three wins in singles.  Senior Arthur Libaud and junior Pearse Dolan, along with the junior duo of Jamie Fraser and Elio Lago, each got wins in doubles.  While in singles, Dolan, Lago and Fraser got themselves wins to help lock up the big-time victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): The match would be decided in doubles, but Louisiana first had to take care of business in singles.  At No. 2, Dolan battled through an attempted comeback by Coastal’s Zak Talic, winning in a three-set thriller, 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Lago was the lone Louisiana member to get himself a straight set win in singles, but it was not easy, as he had to hold off Joel Popov in both sets to come away with the 7-5, 6-4, win at No. 3.  Fraser, who was playing at No. 5, found himself in the same boat as Dolan, looking to hold off a late charging Chanticleer, but much like Dolan, Fraser took care of business.

After taking the first set, Fraser dropped the second set, pushing the match to a deciding third-set, a set that Fraser would win to take the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, over Gonzalo Achondo.  Louisiana’s three wins in singles, along with Coastal’s three wins, meant that the match would head into a deciding doubles point with the score tied at 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana would make its statement and lock up the win in doubles, but the doubles point was just as competitive as the singles points, meaning Louisiana needed to bring its best.  At No. 1, Libaud and Dolan knocked off the Coastal duo of Popov and Talic, 7-5, in a well-earned match at the top of the lineup.

The Ragin’ Cajuns got their second win in doubles at No. 3, with Fraser and Lago cruising past the Coastal pairing of Daiki Tanabe and Pyry Hyrkkonen, 6-2, to give Louisiana the two matches they needed for the win.  Louisiana’s pair of wins in doubles locked up its conference leading 20th win, coming away with a 4-3 win on the East Coast.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana returns home to Cajun Courts for its final weekend at home in the 2019 season, with a visit from South Alabama (Apr. 5) and Troy (Apr. 7).  The Troy match, on Sunday, April 7, will be Senior Day and Louisiana will honor its lone senior, Arthur Libaud, before the match.

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana Women’s Tennis (6-11, 1-5 SBC), in its final home match of the 2019 season, could not hold off a late charging Coastal Carolina (11-7, 4-2 SBC) side, as the Ragin’ Cajuns dropped the Sun Belt Conference matchup, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon.

For Louisiana, junior Clara Mantaux won both her doubles and singles matches on the day.  While sophomores Dana Radovanovic and Floriane Picaut, along with freshman AK Harvey all notched doubles wins for Louisiana as well.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Doubles): Louisiana took two of the three doubles matches to secure the doubles point.  At No. 1 doubles, Louisiana’s Radovanovic and Mantaux easily handled Coastal’s Jennifer Brown and Jessie Mount, defeating them 6-1.

Clinching the doubles point at No. 3 doubles for Louisiana was Picaut and Harvey, who topped Alexa Tiefel and Alicja Zduniak in a tiebreaker 7-6(5).  The pair of wins in doubles gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Singles): Coastal got a win at No. 3, when freshman Hoda Habib, lost to Somer Dalla-Bona in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.  Louisiana’s lone singles win came next, when Mantaux, knocked off Coastal’s Mount in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 5.

Mantaux’s win would be Louisiana’s last win in singles, as Coastal would take the next three matches.  Picaut fell to Demcenkova in straight sets at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4, which tied the score up at 2-2.  Radovanovic then fell at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, to Coastal’s Brown.

The final domino fell in Coastal’s favor at No. 4, when Alicja Zduniak won in three sets over freshman Ai Noa Fabre, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Fabre battled through the match, including coming back during the first set to win that set, but she could not hold off Zduniak, and the win locked up Coastal’s 4-2 victory.

UP NEXT FOR THE CAJUNS: Louisiana continues Sun Belt Conference play with a trip to Alabama next weekend, starting with a visit to Troy (Apr. 6), before wrapping up its weekend at South Alabama (Apr. 7).
