Tennis: Banas Named to All-Sun Belt Men’s Team
Banas Named to All-Sun Belt Team
MONROE, La. – The Sun Belt Conference announced the 2008 All-Conference teams
on Thursday. Louisiana sophomore Piotrek Banas was named to the All-
Conference Men’s Singles team.
Banas is currently ranked No. 99 in the nation in singles. He ended the 2008
season with a singles record of 7-3. Four of the seven wins came at No. 1. He
was 4-7 in doubles.
Banas was named first team All-Louisiana as a freshman and ended the 2007
season with a record of 14-6 in singles. He won 12 of those matches at the
No. 1 position.
Also making the All-Conference team were Denver’s Adam Holmstrom, who is
ranked #18 in the country, was named to the men’s all-conference singles team
and men’s all-conference doubles team with partner Niklas Persson. Persson
and Holmstrom are ranked #3 nationally in doubles play.
Two South Alabama student-athletes were also named to the singles team as
Jack Baker (#31) and Marek Sramek (#119) were honored. Baker was also named
to the all-conference doubles team with both of his partners – Sramek and
R.J. Nagel.
Louisiana-Lafayette’s Piotre Banas (#99), Middle Tennessee’s Marc Rocafort,
and Florida Atlantic’s Oliver Sajous rounded out the All-Sun Belt men’s
singles team.
On the women’s side, Denver’s Mallory Voelker (#65) and Annette Aksdal were
honored along with Florida International’s Liset Brito (#107), Egle
Petrauskaite (#123), and South Alabama’s Michaela Babicova and Adriana
Solarova.
The team of Voelker and Julia Bauregger (#53) from Denver joined Florida
International’s teams of Brito and Petrauskaite (#27) and Brito and Priscilla
Castillo (#51) won the women’s all-conference doubles team.
The 2008 Sun Belt Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships will
begin Friday morning at ULM’s Heard Stadium and the Forsythe Tennis Center.
