Student Athletes: Eight Louisiana Programs Score Perfect APR Marks for 2017-18
Academic Progress Rate measures academic achievement through eligibility, graduation and retention of student-athletes
LAFAYETTE – Eight Louisiana Athletics sport programs earned perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate scores for the 2017-18 season, per the NCAA’s annual announcement of the figures on Wednesday, May 8. The perfect programs include: men’s cross country, women’s cross country, soccer, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, women’s track & field and volleyball. "Our goal is for our more than 450 Louisiana student-athletes to continually demonstrate excellence in the classroom, and we have several of our Ragin’ Cajuns sport programs being recognized for their hard work by the NCAA," Director of Athletics Bryan Maggard said. "Our mindset of competing for and winning championships begins in the classroom, and I’d like to commend all of our head coaches for prioritizing academic achievement." The APR, created by the NCAA to provide a real-time measurement of academic success than graduation rates offer, is a team-based metric where scholarship student-athletes earn one point each term for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating. Every Division I sports team submits data to have its Academic Progress Rate calculated each academic year. The NCAA reports both single-year rates and four-year rates, on which penalties for poor academic performance are based.
