Spotlight on Former Athlete: Kimberly “Kim” Callaway Morvant

When a visitors tours the hollowed confines of Earl K. Long Gym, there are four murals which adorn the playing area.  Two of these are for former Women’s Basketball players and two are for former Volleyball players.  One of these players is Kim Morvant, Volleyball 1988-91.

Kim was a four-year starter and earned four letters in Volleyball during her career as a player at UL between 1988-91.   The Edna, TX high school graduate was the only freshman on the All-American South Conference 1st team in 1988.

Her play at UL led to many more records and distinctions. The 1990 Volleyball Team was ranked 16th in the South, the first time a UL Volleyball Team appeared in an NCAA poll.

Kim’s name and records appear throughout the Volleyball Media Guide.  Here are some of her acheivements: 
Ranked as high as 10th in the nation with an average of .371 in 1990;
Reached a national milestone in the last ASC miniseries in Ruston with a .778
hitting percent against UT-PanAmerica. This ranks as the 7th best performance in
collegiate history for players with more than 15 attempts according to the
American Volleyball Coaches Association in1990; 
All-American South Conference 1st Team in 1990;
2nd Team All-Louisiana in 1988;
1st Team All-Louisiana in 1990;
American South Player of the Week 10-1-90.

Kim Callaway Morvant gets an assist from Annette Carney Propp

After graduating from what USL, Kim began her teaching and coaching career in St. Landry Parish at Leonville Elementary and Beau Chene High School.  She then moved to Teurlings High School.  She continued to stay involved with volleyball by coaching at Our Lady of Fatima, with the Southern Spikers Volleyball Club, and presently with VBL Diggers.  In 1996 she was given the honor of being the Head Volleyball Coach of the West Team  for the LHSAA All-Star game.  Since 2005, she has been teaching Physical Education to Pre-K – 4th graders at Green T. Lindon Elementary School in Youngsville. 

Kim’s parents are Montie and Cathy Dial Callaway of Edna, TX. A devoted wife and mother, Kim is pictured with her family below.
