Spotlight on Former Athlete: 1912 – A Special Year – First L’AcadienThe 1912 L’Acadien was a special edition not only because it was the first edition, but because the L’Acadien staff went all out to assure a publication of the highest quality. With the advent of the first yearbook, many images and information about the athletic program were captured. These not only documented the roster and scores of the teams, but many of the reports also speculated about next season and the reasons for optimism. Also, these yearbook narratives provided information about program upgrades and improvements. A review of the early yearbooks clearly pointed to a pattern for growth and excellence at the university, albeit in the minds of the student editors. Click on http://athleticnetwork.net/picpopup.php?piclibID=4597 and read about the 1911 football season marking the beginning of athletics relations with university teams and no games of football with secondary schools were scheduled. Although games with other colleges and universities had occured earlier, the university offered the statement to show the direction which they planned to move the athletic program. People "told it like it was" in those days and they weren’t concerned about political correctness or people’s feelings when discussing one’s athletic status. Thus, S.L.I.I. had a football team and a "Scrub" team. By clicking the above link, one can view the projections for following years, summarized in this quote, as follows: "Our hopes for next year run high, and with our indomintable Bercegeay leading the team and a good supply of material developed by our Scrubs the past season, we feel sure that the scores of 1912 will be such that any school may feel proud to call theirs." Below are pictures of the Football Team Captain and the Scrub Team Captain.
