Softball: Webre-LeBlanc Rejoins Softball Staff
The University of Louisiana athletics department announced Thursday the return of alumnus Joy Webre-LeBlanc to the Ragin’ Cajuns softball coaching staff.
Her hiring is pending approval from the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. She replaces Chris Malveaux, who recently accepted a position at Bradley University. Webre-LeBlanc, whose first stint on the Cajuns’ staff encompassed the 2008 and 2009 seasons, returns to her alma mater after spending the previous two seasons as head coach at Lafayette-based St. Thomas More High School. She had great success at STM, capturing back-to-back district 4-5A titles. In 2010, the Lady Cougars won the Louisiana Class 5A State Championship. Webre-LeBlanc is expected to contribute in all phases of the program. Her knowledge as an All-Sun Belt catcher will give her expertise in helping pitchers in the bullpen, while critiquing the Cajuns catchers. With experience playing shortstop, she is also expected to provide defensive instruction for the infielders. "She is not your typical assistant coach," said co-head coach Michael Lotief. "She understands the big picture and her knowledge and experience will help our staff immensely. "She has been a winner everywhere she has been, whether it has been here as a student-athlete/coach at UL or as a head coach at the high school level." Webre-LeBlanc first served as the Cajuns assistant coach in 2008 and helped guide the team to Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. In 2009, she helped the Cajuns claim their ninth Sun Belt Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Regional championship game against Baylor. The Lafayette native played for Louisiana from 2002-2005. She was a member of co-head coaches Michael and Stefni Lotief’s first-ever recruiting class that landed the coaching duo their first WCWS appearance in 2003. Webre-LeBlanc started every game during her four-year career – a total of 248 games – establishing herself in the record books. She finished in the Top 5 for most games played (248) and set the career record for putouts with 1,818. She had two seasons of double-digit homeruns and ended her career with 34 round-trippers. She also tied for second place all-time with 16 sacrifice flies. Webre-LeBlanc was the battery mate for All-American pitcher Brooke Mitchell, and played a significant role in Mitchell’s record breaking career. Webre-LeBlanc was a member of the Sun Belt Honor Roll in 2001-2002 and the Sun Belt Commissioner’s List in 2002-2003. On the field she was a two-time All-Sun Belt and two-time All-Louisiana selection. "Joy is part of our family," said co-head coach Michael Lotief. "She spent four years as a player and two as an assistant. Her organization, knowledge of the game and competiveness makes her a great asset to our team." Webre-Leblanc earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Louisiana in 2005. She is married to Jake LeBlanc, who is a native of Lafayette. The couple has one daughter, Kennedy Hope LeBlanc. — Ragin’ Cajuns — ![]()
