Softball: Wallace named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week

Contact: Nick Ross

Lafayette, La. – After posting a 3-0 record with a 0.37 ERA (1 er, 19.0 ip) and 42 strikeouts in three starts, sophomore pitcher Jordan Wallace has been named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.

The weekly honor is the first for the 15th ranked Cajuns, who went 5-0 this week in games against Mississippi State, Mississippi Valley State, and Texas State.

“Jordan pitched very well this week.”  Head coach Megan Granger said after the announcement.  “She moved the ball well and hit her spots.  She’s going to continue to make adjustments this season and pursue excellence.”

She opened the week by defeating 2012 NCAA region qualifier Mississippi State on Wednesday, tossing the full 6.0 innings of a mercy rule shortened, 9-1 win.  She allowed one run on six hits, striking out 12 batters, a career-high for a game that didn’t go into extra innings.

Wallace followed that up with a near-perfect performance on Saturday afternoon against Texas State.  She took a perfect game into the sixth, and final inning, before losing it to a leadoff error and eventually a hit with one out to go in a 9-1 victory.  Jordan finished her week with a complete game victory, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and eight strikeouts, as the Cajuns went on to win 3-2.

The Ragin’ Cajuns return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Lake Charles for a nonconference game against McNeese State.  They will then travel to Clearwater, Florida for the NFCA Leadoff Classic, with games against #13/14 Michigan, #12 South Florida, Illinois State, #21/25 Hofstra, and James Madison over the weekend.
